A Brailler is a tool used much like a typewriter. It allows people who are blind or visually impaired to create Braille by using different keys. Unlike a typewriter, a Brailler only has nine keys: a line space (enter), space, back space, and 6 keys for Braille itself. There are six dots in a Braille cell. Sixty-four character possibilities create a tactile communication system. A simple Perkins Brailler costs a little over $800. In comparison, pencils and paper are only a small fraction of the cost, and a print keyboard costs around $20. The Smart Brailler, which uses newer technology to show on a screen and vocalize what is being typed, costs about $2,200.
